“Instructions for living a life. Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” – Mary Oliveth
This blog originally began in 2012 as a place where I could make infrequent updates about a two month journey to Kenya that I was making in the fall. It has since, withstood the test of time, having existed now for more than fiveyears, and has transformed into a place where I have been able to more openly write about my travels and experiences.
In particular, the year I spent living abroad in Guyana found me using this blog as an outlet for the many emotions and experiences that passed my way during my time there. Over 130 entries made their way onto the interwebs over the course of that year. Now, the writing and fun continues…
Where it all began:
In my more than seven years of adventuring, I’ve mainly served with long-term volunteer programs, working full-time jobs while living in community with other volunteers. My commitments to these programs have allowed me to grow in ways that even I have yet to comprehend. My travel experiences have allowed me to deeply experience a small handful of unique cultures. To date, I’ve lived and worked on the equator, the Arctic Circle, the Antarctic Circle, and the Tropic of Cancer. I’ve also lived and worked in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, in the “murder capital of the United States”, on a Greek island, and on the outskirts of the Amazon Rainforest.
Here’s a breakdown of where I’ve been:
September 2010-July 2012: Western Alaska
September 2012-November 2012: East Africa
February 2013-June 2013: Molokai, Hawai’i
August 2013-July 2014: East Saint Louis, Illinois
August 2014-July 2015: Georgetown, Guyana
November 2015-June 2016: East Saint Louis, Illinois
